Type
1 design consists of sheathed thermocouples
hanging free in a protective pipe.
The thermal response is dependent
on air convection inside the pipe.
Quite often the outer pipe is small
in diameter so that the thermocouples
take up the major part of the inner
area of the protecting tube, reducing
thermal lag. Individual replacement
of thermocouples without the removal
of the protecting pipe is possible
depending upon the thermocouple sheath
diameter, length and closeness of
fit. A Pressure Plate type of secondary
Pressure Seal is shown. If secondary
pressure seals are not required, this
seal can be eliminated or replaced
with a weld-in plug. It is sometimes
possible to use compression fillings
to feed through the pressure plate
instead of braze fittings.
